The equipment is also essential in research projects that evaluate nondestructive methods used to test weld joints. The test techniques available in the lab are listed below:

  • Ultrasound

  • X-ray

  • Infrared camera
The camera can for example show how heat spreads in components during welding.

  • Magnetic particle testing
With an electromagnetic yoke and magnetic powder it is possible to find small cracks and defects in components. The magnetic powder cumulates in the defects because of a magnetic concentration. It is possible to find cracks and defects below the surface.

  • Eddy current testing
Eddy current inspection uses the principal of electromagnetism as the basis for conducting examinations. Eddy currents are induced electrical currents that flow in circular paths. They can be used to detect cracks and defects in for example weld joints.

  • Optical 3D deformation analysis
The system measures three-dimensional deformation and strain in components and material. Painted spots on a component are depicted before and after heating, or before and after the component has been subjected to a load of some kind. The spots will move and this makes it possible to calculate deformation.
